| Characteristics | Prized by luthiers and woodworkers for its sheen and distinctive grain, this anamorphosis of the sugar maple gets its name from the tiny knots in the grain, reminiscent of bird’s eyes. While it’s not known how these patterns are formed, one theory is that it’s caused by unfavorable growing conditions: the maple starts numerous new branches to get more sunlight, but with poor growing conditions the new shoots are aborted and the tiny knots remain, a testament to the tree’s hard life. Colors range from pale yellow to medium brown. |
